Is it legal to replace your own toilet?

Seems like a nothing-burger. DIY is as kiwi as L&P sandwiches. However, there are some considerations before you pull up your sleeves and upgrade your JT crapper.

To cut it short, no, it’s not legal. Performing your own connections can be a health and safety risk, and also can affect your insurance policy should you need to make a claim. To add insult to injury, you could be cited by the plumbers board also.

Here is a not exhaustive list of ‘restricted work’ that can only be completed by a qualified plumber, or apprentice under supervision.

  • Installation of sanitary fixtures such as toilets, sinks, showers and the like

  • Installation of water supply pipes associated with the above fixtures/appliances

  • Installation of associated waste traps, waste or soil pipes, vent pipes and overflows.

The list of work that a homeowner can do is not gigantic, the following is a list to explain the type of work allowed.

  • installing or disconnecting washing machine or dishwasher

  • Repairing/replacing taps and associated washers

  • Replacing ball valves/float valves/ball cocks in toilet cisterns

  • Installing shower over bath which is similar to push on rubber hoses over the bath taps

To reiterate, any installing, tampering, moving or modifying waste pipes is not allowed. Any installing, tampering, moving or modifying water supply pipes to sanitary fixtures is not allowed

Even people in power can get it wrong. Our former PM, Jacinda Ardern, got into hot water when she illegally modified a sanitary fixture.
