Why does my toilet constantly fill?

A constantly filling toilet causes an insidious addition to your water bill. It can waste litres and litres of water a day. A telltale sign is if you can hear the water moving in the pipes, you can see water running down the back of the toilet, or you can see that the water has created some discolouration in the toilet bowl. There could be several reasons why this is happening:

  1. Flush valve and flapper issues: The flapper is a rubber component that controls the flow of water from the tank to the bowl. If the flapper is worn or damaged, water can constantly leak from the tank into the bowl, causing the toilet to constantly fill after it has been flushed.

  2. Inlet valve issues: The inlet valve is responsible for filling the toilet tank with water. If the inlet valve is damaged or worn out, it may not shut off properly, causing water to continuously fill the tank.

  3. Handle or button flush issues: If the handle or button doesn’t return to its normal position (e.g. it stays down), the toilet will continue to fill.

  4. Float issues: The float is a device that controls the water level in the toilet tank. If the float is damaged or not adjusted properly, it may not trigger the fill valve to shut off, causing the toilet to constantly fill.

  5. Blocked flush holes: The flush holes in the rim of the toilet bowl can become blocked with mineral deposits or debris, which can cause the toilet to constantly fill.
