Why is my toilet blocking all the time?

We recently went to clear a blocked toilet at a gym in Auckland. Two weeks later we were called to the same toilet with the same issue.

After this clearance we decided, with the owner, that should there be another blockage, we should remove the toilet and CCTV camera the entire line to see what the problem is.

Not one week later we were called back. Another protein shake needed to be cleared.

Taking off the toilet, WE immediately realised what the issue was.

As you can see, the pan connector (the rubber thing that accepts the toilet waste pipe) is offset by 60mm. This means a restriction, and those protein bars will get stuck.

This is a standard plumbing fitting, it’s called an offset pan connector. These are used in ‘rare’ cases when the outlet needs to be moved and it's hard to change the sewer pipe underneath. They are not used at all in an ideal situation.

So, what to do?

We have advised replacing the pan connector with a non-offset version and moving the toilet across 60mm. The only issue is that the toilet will no longer be exactly in the centre of the room. However, in a gym, it’s a utilitarian device, not something that is required to remain in the design aesthetic.

We have not yet been given the go-ahead, so we are waiting for the next block.
